The Magical Approach, Session 8
Think of your own government in ideal terms for a moment. Its citizens are all individuals, with their own lives and interests. The government, if it has their loyalty, utilizes their energies in such a fashion that the majority are benefited, as is the government itself. Yet you cannot really put your finger on "the government," though you might mention the White House as the seat of its power. The government is composed of many people, of course and really extends all the way down the line, even to its least citizen, but the government can direct the use of energies, of goods, commerce, power, and so forth.
The people count upon the government to realistically define the conditions of the world, to have proper intelligence so that the activities in foreign lands are known, to keep up proper communications with other governments, and so forth. Now in some important respects the reasoning mind is like the government in this analogy. If the people in power are paranoid, then they overestimate the dangers of any given world situation. They overreact or over mobilize, using a disproportionate amount of energy and time for defense, and taking energies away from other projects. The reasoning mind acts in the same fashion when paranoid beliefs are in power. It therefore tells all of the citizens - or cells of the body - to mobilize for action, to be on the alert, to pare down all but necessary activities, and so forth.
When a government is paranoid, it even begins to cut down on the freedom of its own peoples, or to frown upon behavior that in freer times would be quite acceptable The same applies to the conscious mind in that situation. Now the people might finally revolt, or they will take certain steps to see that their freedom is restored, and so the body's cells will do the same.
So what we want, obviously, is to ensure that the conscious mind, with its reasoning processes, can make proper adjustments about the nature of the world and the individual citizens within it. I will return later to the purposes of man's conscious mind in nature, and part of that discussion will fall in our book.
Man's mind is really more of a process. It is not a completed thing, like an arm or leg, but a relationship and a process. That process has its source in what I can only call "natural reasoning."

Abraham on Jerry's Struggle with Taxes
Abraham: Jerry struggled as you do, with the idea of paying a lot of taxes and the taxes being used for things he does not approve of... And then we said to him, "Mentally project your taxes towards those things that you appreciate." And then relative to the subject of your government...what you would do if you were in charge. We want to give you something here that will soothe you. And soothing you is what this is all about.
But we want you to understand that everything that is happening - is happening as a result of mass consciousness' participation in it, and your government who makes the decisions about waging the war or dropping the bombs, is a smaller part of the unfolding of the events than you think.
Because all of this has been projected into your future experience. What is happening in your experience today was set into motion by a long-time history of thoughts. So what we're really getting at here is that as an individual, certainly you want to play a responsible role in contributing to your mass consciousness, but we are really wanting you to understand, that you cannot as an individual, nor would you want to, put on your shoulders the responsibility of dictating the way these affairs should turn out because they are not as it appears the results of the decisions of one man, even one merry band of men who are sitting around deciding what they are doing. It's a BIGGER CURRENT than that.

Seth on Riots and Natural Disasters Part B
Seth, The Nature of Personal Reality, Session 665 For many people, a natural calamity provides their first personal experience with the realities of creaturehood’s connection with the planet. Under such conditions men who feel a part of nothing, of no structure or family or country, can understand in a flash their comradeship with the earth, their place upon it and its energy; through suddenly recognizing that relationship they feel their own power for action.
On quite a different level, riots often serve the same purpose, where the release of energy, for whatever reasons, introduces a group of individuals to the intimate recognition that highly concentrated vitality exists. They may not have found it earlier in their lives.
This recognition can lead them—and often does—to seize their own energy and use it in a strong creative manner. A natural catastrophe or a riot are both energy baths, potent and highly positive in their ways despite their obvious connotations.
In your terms this in no way absolves those who start riots, for example, for they will be working within a system of conscious beliefs in which violence begets violence. Yet even here individual differences apply.
The inciters of riots are often searching for the manifestation of energy which they do not believe they possess on their own. They light and start psychological fires, and are as transfixed by the results as any arsonist. If they understood and could experience power and energy in themselves they would not need such tactics.
As racial problems may be worked out on many levels, through a riot or a natural disaster, or a combination of both, according to the intensity of the situation on a psychological level; and as physical symptoms can be pleas for help and recognition, so can natural misfortunes be utilized by members of one portion of the country, or one part of the world, to obtain aid from other portions.

Seth: Give unto Caesar
Seth, Deleted Sessions, October 1977
Give unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's. That means the taxes. With all its evils and ignorances, Caesar's world allows framework in which artists, writers, garbage men, physicians and fools can exist... Fools have a right to exist. It does you little harm to help uphold their world.

Seth: You Can't Blame the Government
Seth, ESP classes
You add to society. You are not at its mercy. It is not something outside of yourselves; you are a part of it. Any time you speak or agree or disagree, you are a part of society, and you are contributing to change or to lack of change.
The same applies, of course, in political terms. You cannot blame 'the government' for anything, for that 'government' is a term that is meaningless. It applies to individuals. The individuals in your nation are reflecting your private behavior. You find it shocking. You cheat in your own ways. The leaders have a greater opportunity. You use self-justification in your small cheating, and they simply use more gigantic self-justification in their cheating, and in their activities you see spread across the newspaper for the world to see -- your own private acts, only this time, magnified.

You cheat at your income taxes. You think it is funny. So you have a president who is a cheat and a liar! Then look to yourselves, for he is the reflection of what your nation has become -- one reflection -- one reflection only. There are better reflections, thank heaven!
For you are not all liars, and you are not all cheaters. And you lie in one area of your life and be truthful in another. But until you learn to recognize your own individuality, and to realize that you form your reality, you will place the blame upon others. At the same time, you will not be able to accept your own joy, or your own creativity.

Seth on Government Spending, Public Works, and Taxes

The Personal Sessions, Book 5, page 33-34 (Also known as the Deleted Sessions)
"Now: in your country, generally speaking, rich and poor alike are provided with a multitude of services--many of course that are taken for granted.
The rich cannot buy a better light bulb than the poor-though they may have chandeliers galore, and electricity flows in your country through the poorest and richest areas as well. The rich and poor alike are provided with fire protection and police protection. The rich do not have purer water than the poor. Rich and poor alike walk down the same city streets. The same street does not suddenly become gold beneath the foot of the rich man and woman-and pot-holes in city, state, or government roads are felt alike by the tires of the Cadillac and the lowly Volkswagen.
The sewer pipes carry away drainage from apartment houses and mansions and from trailers as well, eventually, and all of that must be paid for by the people.
When you were a young man in New York City, bringing in the cash, your paid your taxes without a qualm. After you and Ruburt met, you had little-enough money for some time, as you tried to find your way, and you had little taxes at all. You had enough to eat, and a warm apartment, so you were hardly deprived--either of you.
Though you paid little taxes, the fire and police protection were not withdrawn, and all of the services continued. Later it seemed that the two of you made your way alone almost as aliens in your society, couched only by your own joint courage and determination. Then, when you began to make decent money, you resented giving it to the government--for the reasons just given, and because the government, it seemed, was built upon beliefs with which you could find no accord. So why should you so support it, when all that you had achieved was gained in spite of your society?Yet that government did indeed couch you, and now through your taxes you couch other younger people, who cannot contribute as yet. There is no doubt that the very wealthy abuse the system, and yet all in all it is a good one, couching the young while they learn, and is so doing, providing a basis from which new beliefs can indeed emerge.
There are many on the edge of the system who are being carried, of course, and who also misuse the privilege. Despite that, however, at a physical level, your money is turned to help others at one level, while your work allows you the freedom of creativity, and the PRIVILEGE of helping at a still higher level.
Ruburt rather good-naturedly appreciates being in the position of paying taxes, since his upbringing was at the taxpayers' expense. I know you understand this-but carried to the extreme, that resentment would allow you barely enough to live on, and you actually would refuse to make money, because you so resent the high taxes connected with a good living. Yet financial security is important to both of you, because it allows you the freedom to create as you choose, and to follow this path. Yet remember that for all of its failings, your peace of mind is also the result of the American services that were available when you did not have much money, as they are now.
